5 Google Business Profile Mistakes Killing Your Local Rankings

Mistake #1: Wrong or Too-Generic Category
Your primary category tells Google which searches to show you in. A plumber who picks "Home Services" competes against every home service business. This alone can drop you 10+ positions.
GBP > Edit profile > Category. Pick the MOST SPECIFIC option. "Plumber" not "Home Services." Add 2-3 secondary categories.
Mistake #2: Not Posting on GBP
Google favors active profiles. No posts in months = Google thinks you're inactive. Your competitor who posts weekly looks more relevant to the algorithm.
Post once a week. Project photo, quick tip, seasonal promo. Google Posts show up directly in your listing and signal activity.
Mistake #3: Ignoring Reviews
Businesses with 20+ reviews rank significantly higher than those with 3-5. Not responding to reviews tells customers you don't care. Listings with responses get 42% more direction requests.
Getting reviews: Text every customer a direct review link within 24 hours of service.
Responding: Reply to EVERY review within 24 hours. Positive: thank them. Negative: apologize and offer to resolve privately.
Mistake #4: Incomplete Profile
Missing hours, blank description, no services listed. Incomplete = unprofessional. Google fills gaps with guesses (often wrong). Competitors with complete profiles win.
Fill in everything: 750-char keyword-rich description, accurate hours, all services listed, website URL, all applicable attributes (veteran-owned, wheelchair accessible, etc.).
Mistake #5: No Photos or Bad Photos
Listings with photos get 35% more website clicks and 42% more direction requests. No photos = no clicks. Stock photos don't count.
Upload 20+ real photos: storefront, interior, team, 10+ work samples, vehicles, happy customers. Add 2-3 new photos monthly.
